CLASSICS CORNER

Welcome to the Classics Corner!

At Indian Gothic, we are passionate about great stories, and we truly believe in their power. There is no better way to get acquainted with the genres we love than by delving into the realm of classic horror literature, featuring outstanding tales crafted by prolific authors throughout the ages. Welcome to the Classics Corner! We felt compelled to publish some of the best Gothic stories in these cherished genres so you may read them and learn a thing or two about the art and craft of writing.

After all, the classics are where the dark first showed up in words. Works like 'The Yellow Wallpaper' have carried the original pulse of fear, asking the earliest questions about our reality—both seen and unseen—and evoking that lingering sense of dread. Is something not quite right? We hope so, as reading the classics means returning to the source for inspiration.

Inspiration, after all, is worth dying for, right?

Happy reading!

Why the Classics?

We return to the classics not out of nostalgia, but recognition. The same anxieties, curiosities, and quiet terrors still move through us, and these stories knew them first. The classics remind us: what frightened us then still lingers now.  The nightmares haven’t changed. Only their masks have. These works still unsettle, provoke, and illuminate, reminding us that the uncanny is really immortal.

Horror Story

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

It is very seldom that mere ordinary people like John and myself secure ancestral halls for the summer. A colonial mansion, a hereditary estate, I would call it a classic horror literature setting, embodying the eerie essence found in Gothic stories. While I might liken it to a haunted house, reaching the height of romantic felicity would be asking too much of fate! Still, I will proudly declare that there is something queer about it, reminiscent of the unsettling atmosphere in The Yellow Wallpaper.

About the Story

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, first published in 1892, stands as a significant work within classic horror literature, not due to obvious monsters or violence, but because of its profoundly unsettling psychological atmosphere. This story builds a slow, creeping sense of dread through themes of isolation, confinement, and the erosion of the narrator’s sense of reality, which echoes the elements found in many Gothic stories. Drawing from the author’s own struggles with postpartum depression, The Yellow Wallpaper is often regarded as a pillar of early feminist literature. Originally appearing in The New England Magazine, it also reflects the contemporary debates surrounding women’s health and autonomy.
